Protect Teeth At Their Most Vulnerable
Molars are the number one target for tooth decay and cavities. Even worse, they are at their most vulnerable between the ages of 6 to 14, after they first emerge. Dental sealants are the best protection offered against cavities, providing molars with a durable shield to stave off bacteria. These thin, plastic coatings are an important first step in lifelong dental care, and are vital for patients of any age. At Cape Dental Care, we’ve been providing Cape Coral and Lee County with sealant treatments ever since we established our practice in 1989.
Why Molars Are So Vulnerable to Cavities
What makes your molars so useful is also what makes them most vulnerable. Molars are designed for the mashing and grinding of food. Their wide surfaces, irregular ridges, and many dips, cracks, and valleys are excellent tools for chewing your favourite meal or treat. But the same uneven surfaces and crevices that help you digest food also provide hideaways for plaque and bacteria. Without sealants, bacteria will settle in the cracks and pits of your molars. These pockets and valleys protect the bacteria, keeping it well out of reach from your toothbrush. This gives bacteria the chance to multiply and eat away at the enamel of the tooth, causing every parent’s dental nightmare: the dreaded cavity.
How Do Sealants Protect Molars From Cavities And Decay?
Dental sealants, also known as fissure sealants or tooth sealants, are thin plastic coatings applied to a patient’s back molars. Sealants retain the varied surface of the molar, while sealing off any hard-to-reach cracks and spaces. This blocks bacteria and plaque from finding hiding places to settle and breed. Sealants provide the added protection of creating a layer between bacteria and the tooth’s enamel.
Sealant treatments remain effective for five to ten years without retreatment. However, chipping, damage, or unexpected wear – while rare – may occur. For this reason it is important that you have your sealants checked by your dentist once a year.
How Are Sealants Applied?
Cape Dental Care’s treatment for sealants is one of your most gentle dental procedures. Before applying the sealant, we thoroughly clean and dry the patient’s molars. Then we paint the liquid sealant across the surface of the molars, targeting areas prone to harboring plaque and bacteria. Finally, the sealants are hardened through the use of a blue spectrum light, ensuring quick curing. Despite the very mild nature of the treatment, we understand that some patients, especially younger ones, might not always feel comfortable at the dentist’s. This is part of why we offer our Patient Comfort Promise:
