Bone Grafting

Build And Strengthen Bone Mass In Your Jawbone

A bone graft is used to build up thin, weak, or underdeveloped bone tissue in your jawbone. For many of Cape Dental Care’s patients, this is a crucial first step toward receiving a dental implant. Also known as bone augmentation or ridge augmentation, a bone graft works by inserting bone or bone-like materials beneath your gums, then allowing the materials to fuse with your existing bone tissue. The procedure can save your jawbone from future damage, improve the appearance of your gums, and provide the necessary bone mass for implants. Cape Dental Care’s oral surgeons have given patients all over Cape Coral and Lee County the peace of mind that comes with thicker, stronger bone tissue.

When Your Jaw Might Need A Bone Graft

If you require dental implants, bone grafting may be necessary. Before your implants are made, your jaw will be mapped to see if your jawbone is thick enough to receive them. If not, a bone graft may be recommended. Bone grafts are also suggested for patients whose jawbones have failed to develop, leaving them structurally vulnerable. Likewise, a bone graft can be used to repair bone loss caused by infection or disease, such as periodontal disease. It can be hard for a patient to determine if their jaw bone is weakened or vulnerable. If you think you might require a bone graft, a consultation with your dentist is strongly recommended.

What Materials Will Be Used?

There are four kinds of grafting materials used for a bone graft. The best grafting materials are often human bone, either from the patient or from someone else. Grafting tissue can also be taken from animals, or can be made of synthetic materials. In each and every case, we work closely with the patient to determine the best choice.

How Will My Bone Graft Be Performed?

Before your bone graft, a complete mapping of your jawbone must be done to plan out your graft. We determine the areas most in need of extra bone tissue, as well as the desired end shape. For the procedure itself, the grafting materials must be inserted and shaped beneath the gums. For this part of the procedure, we offer local anesthetic, to ensure your surgery is painless. We also offer sedation dentistry, including IV sedation, which allows for a peaceful, stress-free procedure. We take every step possible to ensure your well-being and comfort. This is part of why we guarantee our Patient Comfort Promise:

Cape Dental Care is committed to ensuring your visit is as pleasant and comfortable as possible. Our dentists and support staff provide every patient with the utmost of courtesy and gentle dental care. Each treatment takes place in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, and every patient room offers a therapeutic view of our soothing and beautiful aviary. We also offer a wide range of anesthetics, sedatives, and pain relief options for patients whose treatments or personal needs demand them. Do not hesitate to discuss any concerns with your dentist. We guarantee every effort will be made to accommodate your needs or requests.

In the first weeks after your bone graft, special care must be taken to ensure the graft’s success. You will be advised to avoid disturbing the graft site, and to rinse your mouth four to five times each day with salt water. Speak with your oral surgeon about other steps you should take for your bone graft after care.
